The Knight Foundation Empowers Entrepreneurs
Matt Haggman is Miami Program Director at the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. In this role, Haggman leads Knight’s communities program in South Florida. Haggman is an award-winning journalist who previously worked for nearly a decade reporting on issues of local and national importance.
To help sustain healthy communities in a democracy, Knight aims to increase the ability of individuals to engage in change. Knight fosters initiatives that develop in people a strong sense of belonging and caring, timely access to relevant information, the ability to understand that information, and the motivation, opportunity and skills to take sustainable action on a range of issues throughout their lives.
Knight Foundation fosters innovative approaches to increasing engagement skills in the community development field. The foundation funds programs that use technology to foster engagement. It supports individuals as agents for engagement, with a focus on youth leadership, social entrepreneurs and local institutions. We will discuss their activities in Miami and other locations across the USA.
Amazing Advances in Lung Cancer Detection
Our UHealth guest is Dr. Richard Thurer, professor of surgery. He discusses the lung cancer screening program offered at the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Lung cancer is the No. 1 cause of cancer death in the nation and the second leading cause of death from all causes. An estimated 250,000 Americans will be diagnosed with lung cancer in 2011 and 150,000 will die.
In Florida alone, lung cancer will claim 10,000 lives. There are enormous benefits to catching lung cancer early. “Survival is three to four times higher if it’s caught very early. That means lives saved,” Thurer says. Smokers – listen up!
