In business, it’s important to have an edge – something that sets you apart from the crowd and gets you noticed.
And I happen to know a number of people who get plastic surgery to look better and be more competitive in the marketplace.
One of our recent guests, Dr. Carlos Wolf of Miami Plastic Surgery, also sees a lot of that. Interestingly, after 26 years of practice here, he’s noticed a growing number of men getting face lifts, eye treatments, botox, etc.
It could be the older guy who is concerned about competition from younger colleagues. It could be the older guy who marries a younger woman and is concerned about competition from younger suitors or who doesn’t want to look like the grandfather to his younger children.
In any case, Wolf said, the key is to maintain perspective and balance. If you opt for invasive treatment, you want to look “refreshed,” not freakish.
“What I’ve found in the past 10 or 15 years is that it’s important to stay youthful. Most men want to look younger, but still look like themselves,” he said.
The same is true for women, Wolf added.
“A lot of times I have to tell patients, ‘You don’t need anything. Relax.’ Looking overdone is worse than doing anything else,” he said.
Wolf said what you see at the Emmy Awards or on certain reality TV shows gives plastic surgery a bad name.
“These are people who get injected at someone’s salon, someone’s garage, someone’s hotel. It’s scary. They get injected with biopolymer, and what appears to be a good thing now in five or six years keeps growing,” he said.
“Miami is the cowboy capital of plastic surgery. You could be a gynecologist injecting botox. In Miami, there’s really no integrity. Unfortunately, you have urologists doing facial surgery, facial injectables, lasers.”
With so much potential for harm, I had to ask: What do patients look for in a plastic surgeon?
Wolf said you want credible physicians who provide a variety of non-invasive and invasive procedures so they can chose what’s really best for the patient.
And at outpatient facilities especially, he said, it’s not just about the procedure but what happens before and after. Is the facility certified? Is the anesthesiologist board certified? These are the kinds of questions to ask.
Do your research, Wolf said. Research the doctor online. Talk to the doctor. Talk to some of his or her patients, if possible. Look him up on the Florida Board of Medicine web site.
Wolf specializes in facial surgery, and he’s been doing it for a long time. If you want to get in touch with him, visit miamiplasticsurgery.com or call 305-595-2969.
