“Print is dead!”
That’s the takeaway you’ll get from mainstream media sources as they recount story after story of failed or failing newspapers and magazines.
But Gary Press respectfully disagrees. As chairman of Lifestyle Media Group, he says print isn’t dead at all. In fact, it’s having a revival on the local level.
LMG has 10 local community/business magazines, and he came into the studio recently to talk about the company’s 11th: South Florida Business & Wealth.
SFBW, which launches in September, will be a high-end, community-oriented lifestyle/business magazine aimed at the tri-county area.
“When you look around the country, most major communities have a solid business magazine. We don’t have one in South Florida,” Press said.
He and publisher Kevin Gale will emphasize the wealth aspect of South Florida, targeting business decision-makers from the C-suite on down with articles about the South Florida lifestyle and local investment opportunities.
“These are the things that were only chatted about a cocktail parties and dinners in the past,” Gale said.
“The thing about our readers is their wealth decisions and their business decisions are very intertwined.”
Bolstering that aspect of the publication is South Florida’s trend toward redevelopment and urban villages. As the area grows, self-contained communities that provide a live-work-play environment will become crucial to maintaining a high quality of life, he said.
Press said he and Gale have assembled a team of high-quality staff writers and freelancers that have years of writing and business experience.
“It’s not hard to get great things done when you have wonderful people around you,” he said.
One unique aspect of the publication – one that should help it win where others have lost – is that the readers and advertisers will in many cases be the same people, Press said.
And, he added, it will provide a connection between people and communities where none exists via the print magazine, the digital operations, and events.
