The March 2 edition of the Fried On Business radio program was a veritable smorgasbord of excellent guests covering excellent topics.

Future of autonomous vehicles

First up was my great friend Larry Zinn, general manager of Warren Henry Land Rover, Range Rover, Infiniti and Jaguar, to discuss the future of autonomous vehicles.

Now, autonomy has been appearing in cars for a few years in the form of emergency braking, lane drift warnings and more. All of that is coalescing toward a concerted push into fully autonomous vehicles, Zinn said.

“Some of the technologies really aren’t ready yet, and there are a lot of debates that go behind what’s really ready for the mass market,” he said.

“Until a lot of these questions are answered, I don’t think we’re going to have full autonomy, but as somebody in the industry it really presents a lot of interesting opportunities, challenges and changes as things move forward.”

Next up, said Zinn, will be vehicles that are networked with each other on the road. Incredible stuff.

The evolution of Wynwood

Then Tony Cho, President of Metro 1 in Wynwood, gave us a glimpse into how he became a driving force in the revitalization of the Wynwood neighborhood.

This interview was recorded earlier in one of Cho’s signature properties, the Wynwood Gateway complex. It is a prime example of what the Wynwood neighborhood is becoming.

“It really exemplifies what, to me, Wynwood is – which is independent businesses, old warehouses that are converted and re-purposed to something that is relevant today,” he said.

Cho said he didn’t find Wynwood. Wynwood found him. He bought an apartment in 2000 near what would become the Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. When plans for the center were announced, he sold the apartment and tripled his money.

“I kind of had this ah-ha moment about how art and culture really play a role in revitalization and real estate appreciation – and really the good and the bad of what that means and how to do it from a place of integrity,” he said.

Using genetically modified mosquitoes to fight zika

Next, Derric Nimmo came on board to talk about how UK-based Oxitec is using genetically modified mosquitoes to fight the zika virus.

How? I’m glad you asked.

Nimmo said the male mosquitoes are injected with a self-limiting gene. When they mate with a female mosquito, they pass this gene to the offspring.

The offspring die. The males die. Everybody’s happy. Except the mosquitoes.

And the best news, Nimmo said, is that the gene dies with the mosquito. Nothing persists in the environment. The males only mate with the non-native species that carry zika, dengue and chikungunya, so only those species pass away.

Using holograms for health

My last guest – certified wellness educator and coach Julie Phillips – came on board to talk about using holograms for health.

No, we’re not talking Star Trek. Instead, we discussed Quantum Holographic Discs. These have helped my wife, Vivian, with some sleep difficulties, and they’ve helped boost my immunity.

Imagine, if you will, a small sticker the size of a postage stamp. It looks and feels like an adhesive bandage. In Vivian’s case, one placed on each temple allowed her to get some badly needed, deep sleep.

There are nine different types of Quantum Holographic Discs, Phillips said, designed to provide a variety of benefits – such as sleep improvement, pain relief, or stress relief.

“It isn’t curing anything. It’s helping the body to balance its energy. We don’t have just physical bodies, we have energy bodies. It’s a beautiful, simple tool, and I think of it as acupuncture without needles,” she said.
