I’ve started noticing something on my Facebook page. People are asking for more pep talks, so to speak. They want some positive energy and advice on various subjects.
So on the most recent show I decided to devote some time to a subject that resonates with almost everyone – getting jobs and starting careers.
When someone asks me for help in getting started or moving ahead, here are some of the things I tell them.
First thing: You need to look professional. Sharp as a tack. That means a coat and tie in most cases.
Also, be positive. Make sure you exude optimism and energy.
If it’s an interview, make sure you know who you’re meeting with. Google them. Visit Linkedin. Learn some things about their history and the history of the company.
Know who you want to meet and why. Be focused. Know what kind of career you want. If necessary, consult the Book of Lists to identify targets for an introduction.
By the way, how do you know who knows who you want to meet? Two words: social media. Get in the mix.
Be truthful and honest. A young man once asked me for a meeting over coffee. He never showed up. Later, he called me to apologize and explain he had gotten drunk the night before. I then ran into him at a conference, and he apologized once again and asked for a referral.
I said I would call the person interviewing him and let him know the good and the bad of the situation.
You know what? That young man got the job anyway, and today he’s very successful. All because he was straightforward and honest.
Now, here’s one of the most important keys to career advancement: mentorship. You’ve got to find someone to mentor you. Someone who will be your friend and be honest enough to tell you when you’re not up to par.
