Last week, we had Lolly Green, MSW, on the show for her 75th birthday. Lolly has had her share of ups and downs during her 75 years just like anyone. From raising children, to rejoining the workforce, to selling real estate and used cars, to reinventing herself after 50 as a social worker, Lolly dealt with just about everything.
She maintains a happy and loving attitude every day. She attributes her good health and longevity to 11 core concepts. We discussed them on our show, and she lists them here.
I know her concepts help me live a happy life. I hope you find these tips helpful, too.
11 Secrets to a Long and Happy Life
1. LIFE IS NOT FAIR! Just realize this, and you will be able to accept the things that come your way, both good and difficult.
2. TAKE ONE DAY AT A TIME. The future is not here yet, and the past cannot be changed.
3. Hug a porcupine? Not a good idea. Learning to “let go” of negative thinking can make or break someone’s life experience.
4. Bring your “A-Game” every day. A good idea. Doing your best at what you DO the best means everyone around you will benefit. And so will you.
5. Ask, “What can I give?” instead of “What can I get?” Think of ways you can add to the life experience of others, not just trying to grab more and more and leave others in the dust! (More is NOT always better, by the way).
6. Be a builder-upper instead of someone who tears things down (“no gossip” means a better work or social experience for everyone.) Remember your mother’s old saying, “If you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all!”
7. Fault finding – acting as a “judge” – will not be helpful. Find the good things about people around you. Make sure you say something POSITIVE to others, even something “small.” Saying, “You look great today”, can be a way to start an exchange with someone.
8. Set GOALS. Make a commitment to whatever you pursue. Make a promise to yourself to do your very best and not give up until you succeed at reaching your goal.
9. Be motivated. If it’s something you REALLY WANT, it’s likely you’ll get it. Motivation will propel you to your goal.
10. Treasure your health: Make sure you get adequate sleep, eat healthy foods on time and in small amounts. Walk when you can, exercise regularly. Lead a “clean” life – it will serve you well over your lifetime. No street drugs; minimal alcohol, and absolutely no smoking. Drink water throughout the day to stay well hydrated.
11. Practice “gratitude.” Finally, COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS. Take the time to think of how fortunate you are. We all have very blessed lives. We have so many things and so many opportunities these days – more than the kings of olden days could dream of having. Instead of feeling a LACK in your life, feel BLESSED.
